Today we set out for Cuidad Mitad Del Mundo or City in the Middle of the Earth, coordinates, 0°00′07″S 78°27′21″W. Follow the yellow line and you can straddle the northern and Southern hemispheres!
Buses here are very inexpensive by our standards; first leg, 25 cents, transfer to second and final leg, 40 cents. Distance about 26 kilometers from mid-Quito - a good hour with traffic. Riding with the locals is always an experience. Thick black exhaust clouds, throngs of school kids in uniform, dedicated change-makers on each bus who deposit money along the route, a smiley, homeless guy who thought it was humorous that everyone was avoiding sitting beside him although the bus was full, so pulled and old toothbrush and tube of toothpaste from his coat, and then left suddenly, just jumped out the back door as the bus was moving! All in a day on the route...
Stopped in to see our travel agent who offered us a ride home so we grabbed dinner first, near Plaza Foch, two huge bowls of steaming chicken soup with full breast on bone in each, followed by chicken, rice, beans, fried plantain and fresh-squeezed mystery juice for a whopping $16.25 (included one beer and .25 for the takeout container).
Plaza Foch sees the humour in the name too - and uses it to advantage.
Looking forward to the Amazon jungle tomorrow for a few days so catching an early flight....zzzzz. No wifi so will be off the radar til about Sunday when we resurface, then head to Galapogos for just over a week, first from a hotel in the islands, then on a yacht for a few days. Spoiled or what?
Foch Yeah!
