Futból Pilgrimage - Football Mecca, Times Three

February 1 -  2, 2015

Superbowl Sunday!

February 1st was also Superbowl Sunday and no one watches the game here, or very few. Believe me when I say we walked ALL OVER town to find a sports bar or somewhere to catch the game. In the end we grabbed some sandwiches and had some beer and wine back in our room. I'm ashamed to say I fell asleep just after the half and did not see the Patriots win, nor did I hear the inevitable armchair quarterbacking and yelling from the guy beside me but I'm damned sure it happened. I must really have been zonked out! 😆

Football (soccer) Pilgrimage - Football Mecca, Times Three
(Guest Blogger Rainer Shine)

When in South America, passions run high for several reasons, politics and religion are rivaled by football. A trip to this southern-most continent would not be complete without a visit to the national stadiums of the three world cup winners from this corner of the world. We had the pleasure to pose in front of the stadiums in Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Rio De Janeiro.

Of course, the real pleasure was to wear a German soccer shirt at the  Maracanã Stadium and on Copacabana beach, emblazoned with the fourth star for the winning performance in last year's world championship in Brazil.

Brazil may have won the most World Cups (5) but Germany won the most important one, the last one, in Brazil, drubbing the home team 7 to 1 en route to the  championship.

A little gloating is permitted under the circumstances. At least until the next World Cup in Russia in 2018.
